You must be aware of Everyman’s Pocket Classics from Alfred A. Knopf. I recently bought their ‘Stories from the kitchen’ book and loved the collection they featured. Based on a few lines from one of the stories by Lara Vapnyar, I created a comic strip illustration. The story is called ‘A Bunch of Broccoli on the Third Shelf’.
Some of the other stories included are:
Love and Oysters by Charles Dickens
Tea by Saki
A Kitchen Allegory by M.F.K. Fisher
Short Friday by Isaac Bashevis Singer
Potatoes and Love (from her book Heartburn) by Nora Ephron
The Joy of Cooking by Elissa Schappell
On the Pleasures of the Table by Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin
On Mortality by Anton Chekhov
To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf
The Manager of “The Kremlin” by Evelyn Waugh
Babette’s Feast by Isak Dinesen,
Owls and Aristocracy by Gerald Durrell
Like Mother Used to Make by Shirley Jackson

The Cheese Symphony from The Belly of Paris by Emile Zola
From Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust
Murder in the Kitchen by Alice B. Toklas
